This page relates ‘Title of the Play’ from the English study on the Malatimadhava of Bhavabhuti:—A Prakarana type of Drama in ten acts revolving around the love-story of Malati (from Padmāvatī) and Madhava (from Vidarbha). This study discusses the history of its author and the literary, social, religious, historical and cultural aspects of the Malatimadhava.
Part 2b - The Title of the Play
The title of the Prakaraṇa Mālatīmādhava itself discloses that Bhavabhūti strictly followed the tradition of Indian dramaturgy in choosing the title of his Prakaraṇa. Regarding the title of Prakaraṇa, Viśvanātha kavirāja opines that the title of a Prakaraṇa should be coined after the name of the hero or heroine[1] . Bhavabhūti has given the title of this Prakaraṇa after the name of heroine i.e. Mālatī and the hero i.e. Mādhava, the principal characters of this Prakaraṇa.
