Sanskrit text, Unicode transliteration and English translation of verse 2.370:

विषयं कृत्रिमस्यापि लौकिकः क्वचिदुच्चारन् ।
व्याप्नोति दूरात्सम्बुद्धौ तथाहि ग्रहणं तयोः ॥ ३७० ॥

viṣayaṃ kṛtrimasyāpi laukikaḥ kvaciduccāran |
vyāpnoti dūrātsambuddhau tathāhi grahaṇaṃ tayoḥ || 370 ||

370. Sometimes, a worldly name when used, covers the field of the technical name also, as the word saṃbuddhi in P. 1. 2. 33, where it should be taken both in the technical and non-technicalsenses.

Commentary

[Saṃbuddhi, in the world, means calling or addressing somebody. Technically, it is the vocative singular by P. 2.3.49. In P. 1.2.33, both the meanings apply according to this verse.

Compare, however, the following remark of the kāśikā on P. 1.2.33—Dūrāt sambodhayati yena vākyena tat sambodhanaṃ sambuddhiḥ. Naikavacanaṃ sambuddhiḥ. The kāśikā seems to exclude the technical meaning here but it does not really do so. All that it means is that while understanding the sūtra, the non-technical meaning should be taken and not the technical one, though the latter is also included in it. The Vṛtti with a little correction in the text, makes this point clear—Dūrāt sambuddhāv ityatra laukika eva kriyāśabdaḥ kṛtrimāyā api viṣayaṃ sannidhānād vyāpnoti. If the sūtra is understood by taking the technical meaning of the word, it would not cover all cases:—kṛtrimā tu na śaknoti vyāptum sarvakriyāḥ śabdaviṣayāḥ.]

It is the sentence which is being discussed in this part of the text. One point which is discussed is whether the action conveyed by the sentence is carried out individually or by the group.
