Consisting of 18 books, the Mahabharata details the history and legends concerning ancient India (Bharata), including a major battle campaign involving the Kauravas and the Pandavas, also known as the Kurukshetra War. This portion also contains the Bhagavad-Gita. Alternative titles: Mahābhārata (महाभारत).

युधिष्ठिर उवाच ।
कानि पण्यानि विक्रीणन्स्वर्गलोकान्न हीयते ।
ब्राह्मणो वैश्यधर्मेण वर्तयन्भरतर्षभ ॥ ३ ॥

yudhiṣṭhira uvāca |
kāni paṇyāni vikrīṇansvargalokānna hīyate |
brāhmaṇo vaiśyadharmeṇa vartayanbharatarṣabha || 3 ||
