वीक्ष्य तान् मुद्गरं नीत्वा
रोहिनी-नन्दनो बलः
आराच् चकार हुङ्कारं
यथा सिंहो मृगान् प्रति

vīkṣya tān mudgaraṃ nītvā
rohinī-nandano balaḥ
ārāc cakāra huṅkāraṃ
yathā siṃho mṛgān prati

vīkṣyaseeing; tān—them; mudgaram—aclub; nītvā—taking; rohinī-nandanaḥ—Balarāma; balaḥ—powerful; ārāc—near; cakāradid; huṅkāram—a scream; yathā—as; siṃhaḥ—a lion; mṛgān—deer; pratito.

English translation of verse 5.8.38:

Seeing them coming, Lord Balarāma took up a club and roared like a lion to herd of deer.
