श्री-बहुलाश्व उवाच
कथं दधार भगवान्
गिरिं गोवर्धनं वरम्
उच्छिलीन्ध्रं यथा बालो
हस्तेनैकेन लीलया

śrī-bahulāśva uvāca
kathaṃ dadhāra bhagavān
giriṃ govardhanaṃ varam
ucchilīndhraṃ yathā bālo
hastenaikena līlayā

śrī-bahulāśva uvāca—Śrī Bahulāśva said; katham—why?; dadhāra—lifted; bhagavānthe Lord; girim—Hill; govardhanam—Govardhana; varambest; ucchilīndhram—a mushroom; yathā—as; bālaḥ—achild; hastenaikena—with one hand; līlayā—playfully.

English translation of verse 3.1.1:

Śrī Bahulāśva said: Why did Lord Kṛṣṇa lift Govardhana Hill as a child playfully lifts a mushroom.
