को ऽयं पूर्वं कुशल-कृत्
कालियो फणिनां वरः
एनं वेदितुम् इच्छामि
ब्रूहि देवर्षि-सत्तम

ko 'yaṃ pūrvaṃ kuśala-kṛt
kāliyo phaṇināṃ varaḥ
enaṃ veditum icchāmi
brūhi devarṣi-sattama

kaḥ—who?; ayamhe; pūrvam—previously; kuśala-kṛt—having done a pious deed; kāliyaḥkaliya; phaṇinām—of snakes; varaḥthe best; enam—this; veditum—to know; icchāmi—I wish; brūhi—please tell; devarṣi-sattamaO best of the divine sages.

English translation of verse 2.13.2:

What pious deeds did Kāliya, the best of snakes, do in his previous birth? This I wish to know. Please tell me this, O best of divine sages.
