श्री-ब्रह्मोवाच
एताः कथं व्रजे भाव्याः
केन पूण्येन कैर् वरैः
दुर्लभं हि पदं तद् वै
योगिभिः पुरुषोत्तम
śrī-brahmovāca
etāḥ kathaṃ vraje bhāvyāḥ
kena pūṇyena kair varaiḥ
durlabhaṃ hi padaṃ tad vai
yogibhiḥ puruṣottama
śrī-brahmā uvāca—Śrī Brahmā said; etāḥ—they; katham—how; vraje—in Vraja; bhāvyāḥ—will be; kena—by what?; pūṇyena—pious deed; kaiḥ—by what?; varaiḥ—benedictions; durlabham—difficult to attain; hi—indeed; padam—state; tat—that; vai—certainly; yogibhiḥ—by yogīs; puruṣottama—O Supreme Personality of Godhead.
English translation of verse 1.4.18:
Śrī Brahmā said: How will they become (gopīs) in Vraja? O Supreme Personality of Godhead, because of what pious deed or what benedictions will they attain this position even the great yogīs cannot attain?
