The Bhajana-rahasya Text 27, English translation, including commentary (vritti). The Bhajana-rahasya is a compilation of verses describing the mercy of the eight pairs of names (Yugala-nama) of the Maha-mantra. This is text 27 belonging to the chapter “Prathama-yama-sadhana (Nishanta-bhajana–shraddha)” representing the last six dandas of the night: approximately 3.30 a.m.–6.00 a.m.

The Vedas (Ṛg Veda) describe the truth of the holy name (nāma-tattva):

ओं इत्य् एतद् ब्रह्मणो नेदिष्टं नाम यस्माद् उच्चार्यमान
एव संसार-भयात् तारयति तस्माद् उच्यते तार इति

oṃ ity etad brahmaṇo nediṣṭaṃ nāma yasmād uccāryamāna
eva saṃsāra-bhayāt tārayati tasmād ucyate tāra iti

One who chants oṃ , which is very close to brahma [here meaning the Supreme Lord] and which indicates brahma , is liberated from the fear of the material world. Therefore oṃ is famous by the name tāraka-brahma (the deliverer).
