Vitastamārga (वितस्तमार्ग) or simply Vitasta refers to one of the four Mārgas or “ways of playing drum”, according to the Viṣṇudharmottarapurāṇa, an ancient Sanskrit text which (being encyclopedic in nature) deals with a variety of cultural topics such as arts, architecture, music, grammar and astronomy.—According to the Nāṭyaśāstra as well as the Viṣṇudharmottarapurāṇa, the mārgas are related in connection with their projection of different sentiments. The instruments should be played in different mārgas for the depiction of different sentiments. For example—In the projection of vīra, raudra and adbhuta rasas, the instruments have to be played in vitastamārga.
