Kutas (कुतस्).—ind.

1) From where, whence; कस्य त्वं वा कुत आयातः (kasya tvaṃ vā kuta āyātaḥ) Moha M.3.

2) Where, where else, in what (other) place &c.; तार्तीयस्य कुतो गतिः (tārtīyasya kuto gatiḥ) Bhāgavata 8.19.34; ईदृग्विनोदः कुतः (īdṛgvinodaḥ kutaḥ) Ś.2.5.

3) Why, wherefore, from what cause or motive; कुत इदमुच्यते (kuta idamucyate) Ś.5.

4) How, in what manner; स्फुरति च बाहुः कुतः फलमिहास्य (sphurati ca bāhuḥ kutaḥ phalamihāsya) Ś.1.16.

(= kasmāt kālāt &c.). कुतः (kutaḥ) becomes indefinite when connected with the particles चिद्, चन (cid, cana), or अपि (api). भयं कच्चिन्न चास्मासु कुतश्चिद्वि- द्यते महत् (bhayaṃ kaccinna cāsmāsu kutaścidvi- dyate mahat) Rām.2.74.2.

9) how much less? much less, [Chāndogya-upaniṣad; Muṇḍaka-upaniṣad; Mahābhārata] etc. In a-kutas, which occurs in [compound], kutas has an indefinite sense (e.g. a-kuto-mṛtyu, not fearing death from any quarter, [Bhāgavata-purāṇa iii, 17, 19]; cf. a-kutobhaya)

10) is also indefinite when connected with the particles api, cid, cana (e.g. kuto pi, from any quarter, from any cause, [Pañcatantra]; kuto pi kāraṇāt, from any cause, [Prabodha-candrodaya]; kutaś-cid, from any one, from anywhere, [Ṛg-veda; Kaṭha-upaniṣad] etc. (cf. akutaścid-bhaya); kutaś cana, (with a negation preceding) from no side, [Ṛg-veda; Taittirīya-upaniṣad] etc.; to no side, [Rāmāyaṇa v, 74, 21]; yataḥ kutaś-cid from any person soever [commentator or commentary] on [Kātyāyana-śrauta-sūtra])
