This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 112.36

संजीवस्मिं च निरये ऊर्धपादां अधोशिरां ।
प्रलंबयित्वा तक्षन्ति वासीहि परशूहि च ॥ ३६ ॥

saṃjīvasmiṃ ca niraye ūrdhapādāṃ adhośirāṃ |
pralaṃbayitvā takṣanti vāsīhi paraśūhi ca || 36 ||

In the hell Samjiva creatures hang with their feet up and heads down, the while they are trimmed with axes and knives. (36)
