This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 2.13

संजीवे सत्वा निरये ऊर्धपादा अधोशिराः ।
प्रलंबयित्वा तक्ष्यन्ति वासीहि परशूहि च ॥ १३ ॥

saṃjīve satvā niraye ūrdhapādā adhośirāḥ |
pralaṃbayitvā takṣyanti vāsīhi paraśūhi ca || 13 ||

In the Samjiva hell beings hang with their feet up and their heads down, and are trimmed with axes and knives. (13)
