This page relates ‘Part 5.7: Rite of rising out of the water (udayaniyeshti)’ of the study on the Agnistoma Somayaga as described in the Shukla Yajurveda (dealing with Vedic Rituals). The Agnistoma sacrifice (lit. “praise of Agni”) connects god with men and is performed in the spring season. It is the model of all the Soma sacrifices and forms a large and complicated ceremony preceded by four preliminary ritualistic days. This thesis deals with all the details involved in the Agnistoma sacrifice.

Part 5.7: Rite of rising out of the water (udayanīyeṣṭi)

[Full title: Rites Performed on the Fifth Day: (g) Rite of rising out of the water (udayanīyeṣṭi)]

Then the Adhvaryu proceeds with the ādityacaru for the Udayanīyeṣṭi.This Iṣṭi is performed on the completion of the ritual of bathing in a water body and so it is called udayanīya (rising out of the water). He performs this Iṣṭi following the procedure of the introductory Iṣṭi i.e., the Prāyaṇīyeṣṭi. But, it is to be noted here that in the Prāyanīyeṣṭi libations are made to Pathyāsvasti, Agni, Soma and Śavitṛ in the śālāmukhīya fire which have been mentioned while dealing with the Prāyaṇīyeṣṭi. But, in the Udayanīyeṣṭi, Pathyāsvasti becomes the fourth deity. Here the order of the deities is Agni, Soma, Savitṛ and Pathyāsvasti..[1]
