Verse 3.14.36
Sanskrit text, Unicode transliteration and English translation of verse 3.14.36:
वीक्येऽपि नियता धर्माः केचिद् वृत्तौ द्वयोस्तथा ।
ते त्वभेदेन सामर्थ्यमात्र एवोपवर्णिताः ॥ ३६ ॥vīkye'pi niyatā dharmāḥ kecid vṛttau dvayostathā |
te tvabhedena sāmarthyamātra evopavarṇitāḥ || 36 ||36. Some characteristics arc restricted to the sentence, others to the compound while others still are common to both. But they have been mentioned without distinction in connection with semantic connection.
Commentary
[Many grammatical operations take place when there is semantic connection (sāmarthya) between words. Some characteristics are found in a sentence where the semantic connection between words is vyapekṣā = mutual interdependence. Others are found in a complex formation (vṛtti) like a compound word when the semantic connection is called ekārthībhāva = ‘integration of meaning.’ Others are found in both. But they have not been shown separately in the śāstra. One sūtra, namely P. 2.1.1. covers all of them and they have to be distinguished according to the circumstances.]
