The English translation of the Sri Bhakti-rasamrta-sindhu verse 2.3.90; a medieval era Sanskrit book, written by Rupa Goswami (fl. 15th century) which represents a devotional (bhakti) masterpiece. In this work Goswami describes the nature and different forms of pure love (rasa) as well as various other topics on Vaishnavism and devotion.

यथा —
निशमयतो हरि-चरितं न हि सुख-दुःखादयो’स्य हृदि भावाः ।
अनभिनिवेशाज् जाता कथम् अस्रवद् अस्रम् अश्रान्तम् ॥२.३.९०॥

yathā —
niśamayato hari-caritaṃ na hi sukha-duḥkhādayo’sya hṛdi bhāvāḥ |
anabhiniveśāj jātā katham asravad asram aśrāntam ||2.3.90||

English translation

“When a person, though hearing the pastimes of the Lord, does not feel either happiness nor distress because of hardness of the heart, how can tears constantly flow from his eyes? It must be from practice alone.”
