विशिष्टे लक्षणा नैवम् ॥ २.१८c ॥

viśiṣṭe lakṣaṇā naivam ||2.18c||

viśiṣṭe—in the result (“what is characterized”); lakṣaṇā—Indication; na—is not; evam—in this way.

In this way, Indication does not occur in the result.

evam ukta-yuktyā.

“In this way” means “by the aforesaid logical reasoning.”

Commentary:

Narahari Sarasvatī Tīrtha elucidates the above sūtra as follows: lakṣyatva-prayojanatvayor bhinna-viṣayatvena tad-ubhayakam ekasya na sambhavatīti bhāvaḥ, “Since the indicated sense and the purpose are not in the same scope, both of them together cannot possibly relate to one thing” (Bāla-cittānurañjinī 2.18).
