स्त॒रीरु॑ त्व॒द्भव॑ति॒ सूत॑ उ त्वद्यथाव॒शं त॒न्वं॑ चक्र ए॒षः । पि॒तुः पय॒: प्रति॑ गृभ्णाति मा॒ता तेन॑ पि॒ता व॑र्धते॒ तेन॑ पु॒त्रः ॥
स्तरीरु त्वद्भवति सूत उ त्वद्यथावशं तन्वं चक्र एषः । पितुः पयः प्रति गृभ्णाति माता तेन पिता वर्धते तेन पुत्रः ॥
starīr u tvad bhavati sūta u tvad yathāvaśaṃ tanvaṃ cakra eṣaḥ | pituḥ payaḥ prati gṛbhṇāti mātā tena pitā vardhate tena putraḥ ||
English translation:
“One form of Parjanya is like a barren cow the other produces offspring, he takes whichever form hepleases; the mother receives the milk from the father thence the father, thence the son is nourished.”
Commentary by Sāyaṇa: Ṛgveda-bhāṣya
He takeswhichever form he plural ases: the firmament withholds or sends down rain at will; the mother receives the milk: thefather is the sky, earth the mother, who receives the rain from the former, which, producing the means of offeringlibations and oblations, returns again to the parent heaven, as well as suppports his offspring-- all livingcreatures
