चोरैर् नीतास् तस्य गावः
काश्चिद् राज्ञा हृता बलात्
एवं दैन्ये च सम्प्राप्ते
दुःखितो मङ्गलो ऽभवत्
corair nītās tasya gāvaḥ
kāścid rājñā hṛtā balāt
evaṃ dainye ca samprāpte
duḥkhito maṅgalo 'bhavat
coraiḥ—by thieves; nītāḥ—taken; tasya—his; gāvaḥ—cows; kāścit—some; rājñā—by the king; hṛtā—taken; balāt—by force; evam—tyhus; dainye—poverty; ca—indeed; samprāpte—attained; duḥkhitaḥ—unhappy; maṅgalaḥ—Maṅgala; abhavat—became.
English translation of verse 4.2.4:
Some of his cows were stolen by thieves and the rest were forcibly taken by the king. Now a pauper, Maṅgala was filled with sorrow.
