The Garga-samhita Verse 1.4.4, English translation, including word-by-word: This text represents a Vaishnava scripture which narrates the life Krishna, It was composed in seventeen cantos by Garga Muni: an ancient sage and priest of the Yadu dynasty having. श्री-भगवान् उवाच
गाः पालयन्ति घोषेषु
सदा गो-वृत्तयो ऽनिशम्
ते गोपाला मया प्रोक्तास्
तेषां त्वं लक्षणं शृणु

śrī-bhagavān uvāca
gāḥ pālayanti ghoṣeṣu
sadā go-vṛttayo 'niśam
te gopālā mayā proktās
teṣāṃ tvaṃ lakṣaṇaṃ śṛṇu

śrī-bhagavān uvāca—the Supreme Personality of Godhead said; gāḥ—cows; pālayanti—protect; ghoṣeṣu—in the homes of the cowherds; sadāalways; gaḥ—for the cows; vṛttayaḥ—activities; aniśam—day and night; te—they; gopālāḥ—protectors of the cows; mayāby Me; proktāḥ—said; teṣām—of them; tvam—you; lakṣaṇam—characteristics; śṛṇu—please hear.

English translation of verse 1.4.4:

The Supreme Personality of Godhead said: They are cowherd people. Day and night they protect the cows in the villages of cowherds. Listen and I will describe them.
