Source: Wisdom Library: Maha Prajnaparamita SastraVivādamūla (विवादमूल) refers to the “origin of quarrels”, according to Mahāprajñāpāramitāśāstra (chapter 2).—Accordingly, “[Question.—Why do Buddhist sūtras begin with the word evam, ‘thus’?]—[...] Furthermore, to say: ‘My doctrine is true (satya), the other doctrines are deceptive (mṛṣāvāda); my doctrine is absolute (parama), the others are wrong (abhūta)’: such is the origin of quarrels (vivādamūla). Here the term Evam designates a doctrine free of quarreling: listening to the words of others, it declares: ‘This man is not wrong’. That is why the Buddhist sūtras begin with Evam”.
