Vitex negundo (berry) is known in Sanskrit as Sinduvāra, and whose odor is said to resemble certain elephants, according to the 15th century Matangalila composed by Nilakantha in 263 Sanskrit verses, dealing with elephantology in ancient India, focusing on the science of management and treatment of elephants.—[Cf. chapter 8, “on marks of character”]: “3. Who tries to do reprehensible things, delights overmuch in fighting, is mean natured, not in the least compassionate, has the odor of the Vitex negundo berry (sinduvāra), of aloes, or of fish, a killer elephant, he has the character of a demon”.
