The name is derived from the words sveda, translating to “sweat” or “perspiration”, and upaga, translating to “belonging to”. It is a technical term used throughout Āyurveda. Examples of plants pertaining to this category include Śobhañjana (Moringa pterygosperma), Ekāranda (Ricinus communis), Vriscira (Boerhavia diffusa var.) and Punarnavā (red variety). The collection of herbs named Svedopaga is one of the fifty Mahākaṣāya.
