Sūtraṣaṭka (सूत्रषट्क) refers to certain lines, to be marked on the ground before the construction of a building. First, the soil is tested and prepared by digging the foundation pit, then it should be prepared (filled with coarse sand, beaten with rammers etc.) and finally, the leveled ground should be marked with six important contour lines, called sūtraṣaṭka.

The six lines (sūtraṣaṭka) are known as:

  1. mānasūtra,
  2. vinyāsasūtra,
  3. adhiṣṭhānasūtra,
  4. upapīṭhasūtra,
  5. homasūtra,
  6. pratyavasānasūtra.

On top of the ground marked with these lines should be placed a layer of bricks, known as prathameṣṭakā. This layer of bricks (iṣṭakā) should extend over the entire area of the building.
