Śuṇḍamakara (शुण्डमकर) refers to a variety of Makaravaktra, which refers to one of the four classes of praṇālas (“water-drains”) constructed into the sanctum for the purpose of draining oblation water and rainwater. It is a Sanskrit technical term used throughout Vāstuśāstra literature. The makara-praṇāla is connected with the Śudra caste. The Śuṇḍamakara is also known as Mataṅgamakra.

Śuṇḍamakara (शुण्डमकर).—A type of praṇāla, or ‘water-drain’.—The makara variety of praṇāla also has a sub variety called by the name śuṇḍamakara or mataṅgamakara. Amarakośa and the Jaina āgama mention this variety. From the name given to this type of praṇāla, it becomes clear that makara represented should also possess a trunk (śuṇḍa). A few praṇālas of this variety are noticed . In these examples the wide-open mouths of the makaras are relieved. The upper part of the mouth has a small spiral trunk. This suits the description given in the texts.
