1. To perish, to be ruined; அழிதல். புகழல் லாற் பொன்றாது நிற்பதொன் றில் [azhithal. pugazhal lar ponrathu nirpathon ril] (திருக்குறள் [thirukkural], 233).
2. To die; இறத்தல். மடமாக்கள் பொன்றிலென் பொன் றாக்காலென் [irathal. madamakkal ponrilen pon rakkalen] (நாலடியார் [naladiyar], 323). (திவா. [thiva.])
3. To fail; தவறுதல். பொன்றலில் பகழிக்கு [thavaruthal. ponralil pagazhikku] (கம்பராமாயணம் வருண. [kambaramayanam varuna.] 77).
