Source: Wisdom Library: Maha Prajnaparamita SastraKālavilokana (कालविलोकन) refers to the “examination of time” and represents one of the “four examinations” (vilokana) that the Buddha made before entering birth from the Tuṣita heaven, according to the 2nd century Mahāprajñāpāramitāśāstra (chapter VII).—“What is the examination of time? There are eight periods in which Buddhas appear: When the human lifespan is 84,000, 70,000, 60,000, 50,000, 40,000, 30,000, 20,000 and 100 years. The Bodhisattva says to himself: ‘The duration of the human lifespan is one hundred years; the time of appearance of the Buddha has arrived’. This is the examination of time (kāla-vilokana)”.
Mahayana (महायान, mahāyāna) is a major branch of Buddhism focusing on the path of a Bodhisattva (spiritual aspirants/ enlightened beings). Extant literature is vast and primarely composed in the Sanskrit language. There are many sūtras of which some of the earliest are the various Prajñāpāramitā sūtras.
