Ākāranirūpaṇā (आकारनिरूपणा) referst to “determination through a form”, according to Bhartṛhari’s fifth-century Vākyapadīya—an ancient Sanskrit text dealing with the philosophy of grammar.—Accordingly, “[...] Every object—which has as the basis [for its awareness] a word that conveys it—descends into the domain of action insofar as it is determined by means of recollective determination (smṛtinirūpaṇā), linguistic determination (abhijalpanirūpaṇā), and determination through a form (ākāranirūpaṇā). And the distinction amongst musical notes such as ṣaḍja, ṛṣabha, gāndhāra, dhaivata, niṣāda, pañcama, and madhyama—relative to which no commonly known word that conveys them has been established—isn’t determined without an awareness of a word that could serve as the basis for that determination. [...]”.
