Betwixt Thee and Us

Dr. H. Tulsi

Betwixt Thee and us, seven doors there are,
it’s said, which mountain-like our path towards Thee bar.
Then teach us, Lord, how to push each door ajar.

We cannot open even the first-of Maaya Sakti,
How then shall we pass the later Kriya Sakti,
and Para, Ichcha, Gnyaana, and Chit Sakti?

O Venkateswara, Thy temple here on earth,
atop seven hills which occupies its birth,
is accessible through roads across the mounts’ girth.

But visible not the roads that lead to Thee in      Heaven
and pervious not Thy sanctum doors which are seven.
What hope, then, for morally weak men and women?

Sinning folk, to weaker sections who belong,
far outnumber saintly souls who do no wrong.
Give us strength, O Lord, to strive to become strong.

O Varadayaka, boundless is Thy grace and largesse.
Thy love is never more for some, for others less;
For petitioners there is never a ‘no’ but always ‘yes’.

Thou art the world’s only God, Lokeswara!
Thou art Lord of creatures all, Parameswara!
Thou art supreme King of universe, Visveswara!

Brighter than a thousand suns Thy leading light!
Yet we see not what is wrong and what is right.
Is it because for sinners’eyes it’s too bright?

Grant then O Lord, at least some souls Thy light may see
So that, for rest of us, light-houses they may      be
to help our barques cross this life’s worldly sea.

Grant that we may safely reach the other shore,
en route having found the key to every door
betwixt Thee and us - the key to living’s core.
