1.12: Aims and Objectives of the Study

The Mārkaṇḍeyapurāṇa, which is denoted as storehouse of civilisation, history and culture of ancient India occupies a unique position among the Purāṇas. This Purāṇa covers a vast amount of area to study.

The main aims and objectives of the present study are the following—

• To show the rules and regulations assigned to different varṇas and different aśramas at that time.

• To identify the family status, status of women, marriage systems etc. It will also look into the beliefs and superstitions relating to women, households, child and crops.

• To investigate the food habit and dresses and ornaments used at that time.

• To find out the modes of worship and mythology relating to various gods and goddesses in this Purāṇa.

• To understand the importance of Yoga in life.
