Sanskrit text, Unicode transliteration and English translation of verse 3.14.176:
उपकारि च संस्त्यानं येषु शब्देष्वपेक्षितम् ।
तेभ्यष्टाबादयस्तच्च भूतादिष्वविवक्षितम् ॥ १७६ ॥upakāri ca saṃstyānaṃ yeṣu śabdeṣvapekṣitam |
tebhyaṣṭābādayastacca bhūtādiṣvavivakṣitam || 176 ||176. The suffixes ṭāp etc. are added to words where the feminine is required and useful as part of the expressed meaning but that is not what is meant to be expressed by the words bhūtam etc.
Commentary
[Those words where femininity is also an expressed meaning and useful as such take the feminine suffixes. That is not the case with the word bhūtam in bhūtaṃ brāhmaṇī. Here the word bhūtam does not express the feminine which is only its upalakṣaṇa, something associated with it because of its being in apposition with the word brāhmaṇī which expresses substance as qualified by the feminine. So there is no ṭāp after the word brāhmaṇī.]
