Sanskrit text, Unicode transliteration and English translation of verse 3.14.135:
परार्थं शेषभावं यो वृत्तिषु प्रतिपद्यते ।
गुणो विशेषणत्वेन स सूत्रे व्यपदिश्यते ॥ १३५ ॥parārthaṃ śeṣabhāvaṃ yo vṛttiṣu pratipadyate |
guṇo viśeṣaṇatvena sa sūtre vyapadiśyate || 135 ||135. In the sūtra concerned (P. 1.2.52.) by the word viśeṣaṇa, a word expressive of quality which exists for something else and is a secondary constituent in a vṛtti is meant.
Commentary
[In P. 1.2.52 by viśeṣaṇa, that which is dependent on something else is meant. It is a quality which is meant here and quality rests on a substance and is, therefore, dependent. The matup suffix is elided after a word expressive of quality but it stands in a general manner for that which has the quality. When it is associated with a word expressive of a particular object having that quality, it becomes its adjective.]
