Sanskrit text, Unicode transliteration and English translation of verse 2.49:
सन्त एव विशेषा ये पदार्थेषु व्यवस्थिताः ।
ते क्रमादनुगम्यन्ते न वाक्यमभिधायकम् ॥ ४९ ॥santa eva viśeṣā ye padārtheṣu vyavasthitāḥ |
te kramādanugamyante na vākyamabhidhāyakam || 49 ||49. The particularisations which already exist in the word-meanings are understood from their sequence and there is no expressive sentence beyond that.
Commentary
The view that the sentence is nothing more than the sequence of the words is now explained.

[If the sentence is nothing more than the sequence, it is not anything verbal, it is not something which can be heard. As the Vṛtti puts it: nāparaṃ vākyaṃ nāma kiñcicchabdarūpam abhidhāyakam vidyate.]
