General definition (in Jainism)
Source: academia.edu: Tessitori Collection IVidyāruci (विद्यारुचि) is the author of the Candacaritracaupaī (dealing with the lives of Jain teachers), which is included in the collection of manuscripts at the ‘Vincenzo Joppi’ library, collected by Luigi Pio Tessitori during his visit to Rajasthan between 1914 and 1919.—The author Vidyāruci, was a pupil of Harṣaruci, and belonged to the tapāgaccha, whose leader was then Vijayaprabhasūri. He gives a lengthy exposition of his religious affiliation in the final part of the work. On 85v the text written in the left and right margins and on the last line below the colophon belong to the work and relate to this topic (= Jain gurjar Kavio verses numbered 2354-2358). In some manuscripts they are not part of the text, which explains that they could have been added by a later hand. Information about the author is anyway already provided at other places in the work (final parts of each chapter before the Sanskrit colophons).
Jainism is an Indian religion of Dharma whose doctrine revolves around harmlessness (ahimsa) towards every living being. The two major branches (Digambara and Svetambara) of Jainism stimulate self-control (or, shramana, ‘self-reliance’) and spiritual development through a path of peace for the soul to progess to the ultimate goal.
