Source: archive.org: TrisastisalakapurusacaritraVaṃśaśaila (वंशशैल) is the name of a mountain near which was once situated the ancient city of Vaṃśasthala, according to the Jain Ramayana and chapter 7.5 [The kidnapping of Sītā] of Hemacandra’s 11th century Triṣaṣṭiśalākāpuruṣacaritra: an ancient Sanskrit epic poem narrating the history and legends of sixty-three illustrious persons in Jainism.—Accordingly: “Rāma set out in the night and at evening readied a town, Vaṃśasthala, situated on the slope of Mount Vaṃśaśaila. Rāma saw its people and the king terrified and asked a man, ‘What is the reason for their fear?’ The man explained: ‘This is the third day of a terrible noise that takes place on this mountain at night. From fear of it all the population goes elsewhere at night and comes back at dawn. This is the continual unfortunate state of affairs’.”.
