Source: archive.org: Shiva Purana - English TranslationAśvavāhana (अश्ववाहन) refers to the “(science relating to) the management of horses”, according to the Agnipurāṇa chapter 288 (“Glorification of the phallic emblem of Śiva”).—Accordingly:—“I shall describe the essence of (science relating to) the management of horses and the treatment of their diseases [i.e., aśvavāhana-sāra]. [...] The early winter, winter and spring are commendable for riding the horses [i.e., aśva-vāhana]. The riding of the horses in the summer, autumn and rainy season is forbidden. [...]”.
The Purana (पुराण, purāṇas) refers to Sanskrit literature preserving ancient India’s vast cultural history, including historical legends, religious ceremonies, various arts and sciences. The eighteen mahapuranas total over 400,000 shlokas (metrical couplets) and date to at least several centuries BCE.
