Aśvavāhana (अश्ववाहन) refers to the “(science relating to) the management of horses”, according to the Agnipurāṇa chapter 288 (“Glorification of the phallic emblem of Śiva”).—Accordingly:—“I shall describe the essence of (science relating to) the management of horses and the treatment of their diseases [i.e., aśvavāhana-sāra]. [...] The early winter, winter and spring are commendable for riding the horses [i.e., aśva-vāhana]. The riding of the horses in the summer, autumn and rainy season is forbidden. [...]”.
