Sanskrit text, Unicode transliteration and English translation of verse 3.14.439:
न केवलौ द्रव्यगुणौ तद्वान् वाप्युपमीयते ।
शयितव्यादिभिस्तेषु नोपमार्थोऽस्ति कश्चन ॥ ४३९ ॥na kevalau dravyaguṇau tadvān vāpyupamīyate |
śayitavyādibhisteṣu nopamārtho'sti kaścana || 439 ||439. Neither pure substance nor pure quality nor that which has quality can be compared with the action denoted by such words as śayitavyam, because there is no basis for comparison.
Commentary
[How the relation of upamāna and upameya is not possible with the action denoted by words like śayitavyam is now explained. If a comparison is possible, it would be between the action expressed by śayitavyam and pure substance or pure quality or substance having quality. As there is no common attribute between these pairs, there cannot be comparison. All comparison is based upon the presence of common attributes.
