satīcēṃ vāṇa (सतीचें वाण).—n (The fruits, rice, supari, sweetmeats &c. of a satī or woman about to immolate herself upon the pyre of her deceased husband.) A term for a business or an undertaking of which, after promise has been made to perform it, the relinquishment or abandonment is utterly inadmissible. satīcēṃ vāṇa ghēṇēṃ-ucalaṇēṃ-svīkāraṇēṃ-aṅgīkāraṇēṃ To enter upon (a business or work) with a determinedness or desperateness of purpose to carry it to completion. (The first or literal sense is To, accept the vāṇa or fruits &c. filled into her ōṭī or lap;--used of a woman just widowed. satīcēṃ vāṇa ṭhēvaṇēṃ -māṇḍaṇēṃ To lay down a vāṇa in token of invitation or challenge to undertake some perilous or arduous enterprise.
