Vyakarana (Sanskrit grammar)

Pratyayadhātu (प्रत्ययधातु).—A term applied to secondary roots which are formed by adding affixes like णिच्, सन्, यङ् (ṇic, san, yaṅ) etc. to primary roots or by the addition of affixes like क्विप्, क्यच्, कायच् (kvip, kyac, kāyac) etc. to nouns; e. g. कामय, ह्यारय, चिकीर्ष, जिहीर्ष, जेघ्रीय,चेकीय, गङ्गीय, राजाय, पुत्रकाम्य (kāmaya, hyāraya, cikīrṣa, jihīrṣa, jeghrīya, cekīya, gaṅgīya, rājāya, putrakāmya) etc.; cf. सनाद्यन्ता धातवः (sanādyantā dhātavaḥ) P.1II.. 1.32; cf also प्रत्ययधातु । गोपायति, धूपायति, ऋतीयते (pratyayadhātu | gopāyati, dhūpāyati, ṛtīyate) M. Vyakarana (व्याकरण, vyākaraṇa) refers to Sanskrit grammar and represents one of the six additional sciences (vedanga) to be studied along with the Vedas. Vyakarana concerns itself with the rules of Sanskrit grammar and linguistic analysis in order to establish the correct context of words and sentences.
