Nerium indicum (Indian oleander) was used in the process of organic plant mutagenesis by ancient Indian agriculturists, which presents a safe technology and methodology regarding organic agriculture, according to treatises (such as the Vrikshayurveda). One such technology was to produce flowers and fruits on other species of plants and trees: The term drumavichitrikaranam (“plant mutagenesis”) obtains its true meaning in the literal sense through this objective. Some of them are described in the Upavanavinoda of Śārṅgadhara: such as to grow Nerium indicum (Indian oleander) from Nymphaeae sp. (lily)—an aquatic herb would bear flowers of a terrestrial shrub.
Nerium indicum (in Sanskrit: Karavīra) was commonly transformed from a plant into a creeper, according to in various bio-organical recipes for plant mutagenesis prescribed in the Vṛkṣāyurveda by Sūrapāla (1000 CE): an encyclopedic work dealing with the study of trees and the principles of ancient Indian agriculture.—Accordingly, “A big and strong mud pot should be filled with the mixture of mud and plenty of beef; and the Nerium indicum plant [e.g., Karavīra] should be grown there with effort by watering profusely with cow dung and good quality beef. The above stated plant of Nerium indicum [e.g., Karavīra] should then be shifted to a pit previously prepared by filling with cow bones, well-burnt ashes and then wetted by water mixed with beef. Thereafter, the plant should be fed with plenty of water mixed with beef. So treated, it is transformed into a creeper to blossom profusely and perennially”.
