jānavēṃ (जानवें).—n (yajñōpavīta S) The characteristic thread worn over the left shoulder and under the right (of brāhmaṇa, kṣatriya, & vaiśya). At present several classes of people, Sutars, Sonars, Lohars, and common Maraṭhas, arrogating descent from the Kshatriya, or actuated by whim, adopt this thread. 3 The white strip or line sometimes appearing upon the gem lasaṇyā (Milky quartz). jā0 tōḍāyāsa uṭhaṇēṃ or jānavyāsa hāta ghālaṇēṃ To burst out in most ungovernable rage; to threaten to break one's jā0. jā0 mōkaḷēṃ karaṇēṃ or uktēṃ karaṇēṃ (To liberate the jā0 and one's self from impurity.) A phrase expressing hurried and cursory performance of obsequies or other rites become necessary in consequence of a death or other occasion causing impurity. jā0 sōḍaviṇēṃ or utaraṇēṃ To make a gash across the back like a jā0 with a sword. jānavyācā dhanī A distinctive appellation for a Brahman, a Kshatriya, and a Vaishya. jānavyāsa vastrā bāndhaṇēṃ (To tie a razor to the jā0 This is done literally. ) To be determined to win the day or gain the point. (In failure whereof to cut the jā0) jā0 dhōtara phāḍaṇēṃ or ṭākaṇēṃ To break out with furious passion: also to become shameless and profligate; to lash out or run riot. jānavyācī lāja dharaṇēṃ or jānavyāsa lājaṇēṃ To observe decorum in mindfulness of one's jā0 (badge of sanctity or sacredness). jānavyā dhōtarācī gāṇṭha ghālaṇēṃ To fly into a violent and reckless passion: also, with tujhyā- tyācyā &c., to threaten destruction to the jā0 of another. jānavyālā jā0 miḷaṇēṃ To tally, match, or agree together.
