杜鵑花 [dù juān huā] [du juan hua]—
A general term for about nearly a thousand species of plants (植物 [zhi wu]) belonging to the genus Rhododendron (杜鵑屬 [du juan shu]) of the family Ericaceae (杜鵑科 [du juan ke]). Evergreen or deciduous shrubs (灌木 [guan mu]). Leaves are ovate-elliptic. Flowers bloom in spring, with a broadly funnel-shaped (闊漏斗形 [kuo lou dou xing]), red (紅色 [hong se]) corolla (花冠 [hua guan]). The fruit is a dehiscent capsule (蒴果 [shuo guo]). Recent scholars (學者 [xue zhe]) have divided it into eight subgenera (亞屬 [ya shu]), the most numerous being the evergreen rhododendron subgenus (常綠杜鵑亞屬 [chang lu du juan ya shu]) and two subgenera of azaleas (躑躅類 [zhi zhu lei]). The flowers of plants in this genus are also called "rhododendron flowers". For example: "In the faint March (三月 [san yue]) days, rhododendron flowers bloom on the hillsides." From Bai Juyi's (白居易 [bai ju yi]) poem (詩 [shi]) from the Tang (唐 [tang]) Dynasty (〈雨中赴劉十九二林之期及到寺劉已先去因以四韻案之詩 [yu zhong fu liu shi jiu er lin zhi qi ji dao si liu yi xian qu yin yi si yun an zhi shi]〉): "The most splendid sight is the luxuriant rhododendron flowers, but once the spring wind (春風 [chun feng]) blows them all away, they cannot be held onto."
