Bhrāntāpahnuti (भ्रान्तापह्नुति) refers to one of the 93 alaṃkāras (“figures of speech”) mentioned by Cirañjīva Bhaṭṭācārya (fl. 17th century) in his Kāvyavilāsa and is listed as one of the 89 arthālaṃkāras (figure of speech determined by the sense, as opposed to sound).When the misconception regarding a real thing is discarded by removing the doubt, it is called bhrāntāpahnuti.

According to Cirañjīva when the misconception of one due to doubt is removed by the mention of the real thing denying the unreal, the figure bhrāntāpahnuti takes place. The definition given by Cirañjīva is akin to the definition of bhrāntāpahnuti furnished by Jayadeva in his Candrāloka. We find the same definition of bhrāntāpahnuti in the kuvalyānanda of Appayyadīkṣita.

Example of the bhrāntāpahnuti-alaṃkāra:—

kalasvaraṃ gāyati kokilālītenaiva viśrāmyati mānasaṃ me |
varṣāsu kiṃ kūjati vā pikālī na sā pikālī tu sakhi tadākhyā
||

“The cuckoo is singing in a sweet tone and my mind rests with that. Is cuckoo singing in the rainy season? No, she is not a cuckoo but my female friend named kokilā”.

Notes: This is a conversation between two female friends. Of the two the first one says that the confidante named kokilā is singing. The second female friend understands that cuckoos are singing in the rainy season, then her misconception due to doubt is removed by the first female friend by mentioning that it is not cuckoo but actually the female friend kokilā is singing. So by mentioning the real thing the doubt of the second female friend is removed. Thus it is an example of the figure bhrāntāpahnuti.
