The Kaikolas of Munnur

The Kaikolas especially the weavers were next important community of the Munnur society. The Kaikolas community that held importance during the medieval period. Though Kaikolas were weavers by profession, by and large they lived both urban and rural villages including Munnur. Lands were given to them as grants (Manyam). They were permitted to establish their looms in the temple streets. The inscriptions in this temple described the Thari Irai, tax collected from the weavers during the Munnur region, was notorious for the existence of Kaikolas.[1] The weaver’s existence in the Munnur region was attested by two records for instance.
