Sanskrit text, Unicode transliteration and English translation of verse 3.14.271:
पदार्थानुपघातेन यद्यप्यत्र विशेषणम् ।
उपचारसतोऽर्थस्य सावस्था द्योत्यते नञा ॥ २७१ ॥padārthānupaghātena yadyapyatra viśeṣaṇam |
upacārasato'rthasya sāvasthā dyotyate nañā || 271 ||271. It is true that a qualifier is a word which does not set aside the meaning of the main word. (Here also) the negative particle reveals the nature of the meaning of the word brāhmaṇa) namely, that it has only secondary existence.
Commentary
[The difficulty is removed as follows:—The word brāhmaṇa in the compound has not got its primary meaning, but only a secondary meaning, that is, one who is thought of as a brāhmaṇa though he has not all his qualities. It is this fact which the negative particle reveals and so it qualifies without setting aside the meaning of the word.]
