Sanskrit text, Unicode transliteration and English translation of verse 3.14.243:

विभक्त्यर्थेन चाविष्टं शुद्धं चेति द्विधा स्थितम् ।
द्रव्यं शुद्धस्य यो धर्मः स न स्यादन्यधर्मणः ॥ २४३ ॥

vibhaktyarthena cāviṣṭaṃ śuddhaṃ ceti dvidhā sthitam |
dravyaṃ śuddhasya yo dharmaḥ sa na syādanyadharmaṇaḥ || 243 ||

243. Substance is presented in two ways: (1) as conditioned by the relation which is the meaning of the case-ending, (2) in a pure form. The properties of the pure substance would not result if it is eclipsed by the properties of something else.

Commentary

If, in the vibhaktyartha view also, the compound conveys the relatum through the relation of identity, what is the difference between that and the padārthābhidhānapakṣa? This is now answered.

[In the vibhaktyartha view substance, identified with the relation conveyed by the sixth case-affix, is the expressed meaning. In the padārthābhidhānapakṣa, the pure unconditioned substance is the expressed meaning. These two different views result because of the two different ways in which substance is presented. The gender and number of pure substance do not result if it is conditioned by the relation. Therefore, their extension has to be provided for by P. 1.2.52. When pure substance becomes qualified substance, it is said to be sadravyaḥ. Though relation is the predominant meaning at the word level, at the meaning level, substance is predominant.]
