Verse 3.12.13
Sanskrit text, Unicode transliteration and English translation of verse 3.12.13:
दृशीक्ष्योः सदृशेऽप्यर्थे नाभेदः प्रतिपूर्वयोः ।
ण्यर्थोपादायिनस्तस्मान्न तुल्यार्थाः पचादिभिः ॥ १३ ॥dṛśīkṣyoḥ sadṛśe'pyarthe nābhedaḥ pratipūrvayoḥ |
ṇyarthopādāyinastasmānna tulyārthāḥ pacādibhiḥ || 13 ||13. Even though dṛś and īkṣi have the same meaning, they are not the same when preceded by prati. Those roots which are associated with the meaning of ṇic are not equal in meaning to pac etc. expressive of saṃvidhāna.
Commentary
[Even though the meanings of the roots dṛśi and īkṣi, as given in the Dhātupāṭha are the same, when the preposition prati is prefixed to them, they do not mean the same thing. Pratipaśyati means ‘he sees’ whereas pratīkṣate means ‘he waits’. Similarly, pratirakṣati and pratipālayati do not mean the same thing even though rakṣatī and pālayati are synonyms. That the meaning of all roots can be combined with that of ṇic does not mean that they are all susceptible of saṃvidhāna.]
