Sanskrit text, Unicode transliteration and English translation of verse 2.169:
न कूपसूपयूपानामन्वयोऽर्थस्य दृश्यते ।
अतोऽर्थान्तरवाचित्वं संघतस्यैव गम्यते ॥ १६९ ॥na kūpasūpayūpānāmanvayo'rthasya dṛśyate |
ato'rthāntaravācitvaṃ saṃghatasyaiva gamyate || 169 ||169. In the words kūpa, yūpa and sūpa, one does not see any recurring meaning (for the recurrent word element). Therefore, it is the whole word which expresses a different meaning.
Commentary
Where analysis would not result in a distinct meaning for the different elements, it should not be resorted to.

[Kūpa, yūpa and sūpa have ūpa in common. The remaining element is peculiar to each word, but the meaning of the word is not due to its peculiar element. It belongs to the whole word. (See. M. Bhā. I. p. 32, lines 2-7.) ]
