Shen Kuo (沈括 [chen kuo]), Dream Pool Essays (夢溪筆談 [meng xi bi tan]), Volume 25 (卷二五 [juan er wu]), Miscellaneous (雜誌 [za zhi]): "When I (予 [yu]) was dispatched as an envoy to inspect the border (奉使按邊 [feng shi an bian]), I began to create wooden maps to depict its mountains, rivers, and roads (山川道路 [shan chuan dao lu]). Initially, I traversed all the mountains and rivers (遍履山川 [bian lu shan chuan]), then immediately used flour paste and sawdust (麵糊木屑 [mian hu mu xie]) to sculpt their terrain (形勢 [xing shi]) onto a wooden board (木案 [mu an]). ... The Emperor (上 [shang]) summoned his ministers (輔臣 [fu chen]) to view it together. Consequently, he issued an edict (詔 [zhao]) for all border prefectures (邊州 [bian zhou]) to create wooden maps and store them in the imperial archives (內府 [nei fu])."
