Source: archive.org: Yoga Tradition of the Mysore PalaceGarbhāsana (गर्भासन) is a type of posture (āsana), according to verse 113 of the Śrītattvanidhi.—Accordingly, “Stretch the legs like a stick on the ground and hold the toes with the hands. Then rest the forehead on the knees. This is garbhāsana, the embryo”.
The 19th-century Śrītattvanidhi is a sanskrit treatise describing 80 primary āsanas, or ‘posture’ and several additional ones (e.g., garbha-āsana).
This āsana is what is commonly known as paścimottānāsana in Iyengar and others, Gheraṇḍasaṃihtā II.26 and Haṭhapradīpikā I.28. See ardhapaścimottānāsana and ūrdhvapaścimottānāsana.
Yoga is originally considered a branch of Hindu philosophy (astika), but both ancient and modern Yoga combine the physical, mental and spiritual. Yoga teaches various physical techniques also known as āsanas (postures), used for various purposes (eg., meditation, contemplation, relaxation).
