Dhanāṇagārasajjhāya (धनाणगारसज्झाय) is the name of a work by Śrīdeva dealing with the lives of Jain teachers.—The Dhanāṇagārasajjhāya (in Gujarati) is included in the collection of manuscripts at the ‘Vincenzo Joppi’ library, collected by Luigi Pio Tessitori during his visit to Rajasthan between 1914 and 1919.—The source of the Dhanāṇagārasajjhāya is explicitly given as a sūtra told by Mahāvīra. This is the third chapter of the ninth aṅga, the Anuttaraupapātika-daśa [anuttaraupapātikadaśāḥ]. Dhanya was brought up in comfort in a rich family but decided to turn to monastic life after he had heard Mahāvīra’s sermon. The present poem focuses on the dialogue he had with his mother Bhadrā before he took to monastic life and illustrates a much favoured theme: the contrast between a young man’s inalterable decision and the depiction of all the difficulties awaiting him by unwilling parents, who, in the end, have to surrender. Dhanya was famous for the hard fasts he observed, and the sūtra vividly describes their effects on his body. Later on he was reborn in the Sarvārthasiddhi and finally attained liberation”.
